The University of Eastern Finland has identified 12 distinct cell types implicated in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). In addition, the researchers demonstrated that the genetic risk factors for CAD exert their influence primarily through smooth vascular muscle cells, whose phenotypes alter as the disease progresses.

On the basis of their findings, the researchers devised a risk score system that could be used in the future to foresee an individual’s risk for CAD and to determine the optimal course of treatment.

Professor Minna Kaikkonen-Maatta’s research team at the A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland conducted the study. Using cutting-edge single-cell technology, the cell types linked to coronary artery disease were identified.

The findings significantly expand our comprehension of coronary artery disease’s pathogenesis

The progression of the disease in various individuals may be influenced in part by genetic risk factors that are mediated by different cell types and mechanisms. This knowledge may help prevent the disease more effectively in the future, as well as enable the development of more effective and individually tailored remedies,” she explains.

Coronary artery disease is a global public health concern that, as it progresses, can cause heart attack and stroke. Coronary artery disease is among the leading global causes of mortality.
